Backwards Planning

The resources below give a more detailed explanation of the backwards planning process:

· Backwards Design – The Basics podcast/blog – this is aimed at K-12 teachers, but if you substitute learning objectives for standards it still applies to higher education.

· Using Backward Design to Plan Your Course – this article from the Ohio State University center for teaching and learning breaks the 3 basic steps above into a 5-step

Sustainable Assessment Practices: Creating a Culture of Learning

AI as a Learning Partner

In my Foundations in Liberal Arts Studies course, students spend one unit reflecting carefully on AI and formulating a "Personal Philosophy of Engagement" statement. We discuss the potential impact of overreliance on AI to neurological development. We explore the relationship between effortful struggle and meaningful work. We look at the myriads of ethical dilemmas around AI, from environmental impact to copyright and privacy. But we also talk about ways it can be used thoughtfully, strategically, and ethically.

This week, I'm sharing a video in which one of my students explains how he uses AI to help him compensate for his learning challenges. I'm also attaching an "AI Use Disclosure and Reflection" document, which you are free to download and edit for your own use. In my classes I emphasize transparency and thoughtfulness around AI use.
