In the center of the MCC Library homepage is a powerful blue search box (See image below.) With it, you can cast "a wide net," searching all of our resources--print and digital, including eBooks--at once. Then you can refine your results.
OneSearch will give you both popular and scholarly resources. You can limit to scholarly if you wish.
The most useful limiters are in the two callout boxes below.
Once you run a search, these limiters and check boxes appear to the left of your results. Full text (the default) is already checked. Uncheck it to see additional results.
You can limit to peer-reviewed publications if you want ONLY scholarly journal articles or to MCC print books or eBooks if you are interested ONLY in those formats.
Whatever the format, use the Publication Date slider tool to filter out older items.
Searching with OneSearch means your results will include various types of publications. What kind of information do you need?
Magazines and News (newspapers) will be different from academic (or scholarly) journals. They will be more up-to-date on events but will not discuss research. Academic journals will have articles about research but usually not about current events. Trade publications will focus on technology or business. Reviews are usually book reviews.
Good news! These techniques for searching MCC Library OneSearch are transferable to other MCC Library databases. The layout or interface of other resources may be different but most databases have the same basic features; you will use keywords, limiters and other techniques in all of them. Last but not least, they all save you time and provide citations.
